Ever thought about changing your name?
My name "Dale Kessler" is a legacy I once wanted to change, but now, fiercely embrace!
I was born into a story not of my making, I was named after a father, a stranger who left a void rather than memories. I grappled with this name, a constant reminder of what was missing....a father, a roll model, a mentor, a hand up when I fell down!
Why carry a name that echoed absence? This question haunted me through my later teens. I even pondered a complete identity overhaul in my early twenties, but life had other plans.
My journey was no fairy tale. Wrestling, football, cub scouts, martial arts - attempts to find my footing, often ending in retreat. But these weren't failures, they were stepping stones. Each setback was a lesson in resilience.
Fast forward, through sheer will, I carved a new path. Sports, fitness, and determination morphed me from a quitter to a victor. Most Improved player awards, Best Dressed Senior Class - these were not just titles, but symbols of a profound personal revolution.
The journey didn't stop at sports. Academically, I went from a after school detention regular to teacher's pride. Barely graduating high school with no sense of what was next to, to graduating from Lehigh University and recruited by KPMG Peat Marwick, LLC...one of the top accounting firms in the world! This evolution was my silent rebellion against a predetermined fate.
Recently, I've found peace. I forgave my father, acknowledging his strengths and the genetics that partly define me. His later years showed me fragments of the man/father he could have been by becoming a great grandfather to my half brothers daughters. Kudos to my brother for keeping our fathers past in the past and never venting to his kids about their Grandfathers shortcomings, thats what truly good parents do!
Here's the revelation - my name, your name is our legacy. It's on us to uplift it, to leave a mark of respect and honor. I am the last of my line, and if it ends with me, trust that my purpose is to make it unforgettable!
To the Universe....If I am the last of my line, no question you saved the best for last!
