If you suddenly stop hearing your radon fan, don’t ignore it.
Your radon fan should run continuously and usually makes a low, steady humming sound. If it goes silent, it could mean the fan has stopped working and that means radon gas may no longer be getting safely vented from your home.

What to do:

• Check your system’s warning device (if you have one)

• Look at the manometer (the U-shaped gauge) to see if levels have changed

• Gives us a call to replace it

A quiet fan might seem like a good thing, but in this case, silence isn’t golden. It could be putting your home back at risk. If something sounds off (or doesn’t sound at all,) give us a call to come out to evaluate and replace your fan.

A radon fan should be quiet and barely noticeable when it’s working properly. In most cases, you may only hear a very faint hum if you’re standing right next to it.
If your radon fan is making loud humming, rattling, grinding, or buzzing noises, it could be a sign that the fan is wearing out, or something isn’t working correctly. Ignoring the noise could lead to the system not removing radon from your home the way it should.
If your radon fan sounds louder than usual, it might be time to have it replaced.

With PA, falling under the EPA's Zone 1, meaning it is considered high risk for Radon, breathing it over time increases your risk of lung cancer. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

Nationally, the EPA estimates that about 21,000 people die each year from radon-related lung cancer. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. The only way to know if your home has elevated levels of radon is by testing it. Once testing has been completed and your home results come back level 4.0 or higher, action levels are recommended.

IEA voices are reaching a national audience.

In a recent Forbes article by Jamie Gold, IEA National Policy Director Jane Malone shares expert insight on what homeowners should know about radon—from where elevated levels are found to why testing remains essential.

The article also features Dawn Oggier , a longtime IEA Advocate Member who has been actively supporting radon awareness for more than a decade. A conversation with Dawn at a recent conference helped prompt an important question explored in the article: Can radon levels change over time?

Yes—and that's one reason testing shouldn't be viewed as a one-and-done event.

Seasonal conditions, changes to a building, renovations and HVAC modifications can all influence radon levels over time.

Jane brings the message back to something remarkably simple:
“Testing is the only way to know.”
Maps, home age, foundation type and even a neighbor's test result cannot tell you the radon level inside a particular home.

Radon is a radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Your home traps radon inside, where it can build up. Any home may have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements.
Radon from soil gas is the main cause of radon problems. Sometimes radon enters the home through well water. In a small number of homes, the building materials can give off radon, too. However, building materials rarely cause radon problems by themselves.
