I completely agree with this post.
For those concerned about traffic, think about this: before Avalon and Downtown Alpharetta became what they are today, North Point was where everyone went to shop, dine, see a movie—even ride the carousel. Traffic was heavy, especially during the holidays, and we figured it out.
North Point Mall opened in 1993, more than 20 years before Avalon opened in 2014. For two decades, it was Alpharetta’s primary shopping and entertainment destination.
We also manage large crowds now. Avalon’s tree lighting reportedly attracted more than 40,000 people, Taste of Alpharetta draws more than 20,000, and other festivals throughout Downtown Alpharetta can easily bring 15,000 to 20,000 people per event. Add concerts at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre, and we already know how to plan around busy days.
An arena would bring exciting game days and major events to Alpharetta. On those days, we may need to plan ahead, leave a little earlier or use a different route—just as we do now for concerts, festivals and major community events.
Traffic can be managed. Allowing 100 acres in one of Alpharetta’s most valuable and important locations to continue declining is the much bigger problem.
