🌿 Clarkesville — The North Georgia Town You May Be Overlooking

One of the things I love about North Georgia is that every town has its own personality — and Clarkesville is one of those places I think deserves a little more attention.

It doesn’t have quite the same tourist buzz as some of our better-known mountain towns, and honestly, that is part of its charm. It also has the beautiful Soque River. (Believe it or not, I saw Ted Turner fishing in the Soque River years ago, and it was just too cool.)

Clarkesville has a lovely small-town feel, a walkable downtown with locally owned shops and restaurants, beautiful countryside just outside of town, and that slower pace so many people tell me they’re looking for when they start thinking about moving to North Georgia.

And you certainly won’t run out of beautiful places to explore.
You’re close to the Soque River, Lake Burton, Lake Rabun, waterfalls, hiking trails, and some wonderful mountain drives.

But what stands out to me most about Clarkesville is simply the feeling of it.
It feels comfortable.
It feels friendly.

And it still feels like a real small town.
🏡 A little more peace.
🌲 Room to breathe.
🎣 Plenty to explore.
☕ And a community where you can settle in and feel at home.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the town people think they want when they first start looking at North Georgia isn’t always the town they ultimately fall in love with.

One of the things I love about North Georgia is how easy it is to step away from the noise and find a little peace.

For many people here, that means heading to the river with a fishing rod in hand. 🎣

🍎 Apple Season in North Georgia: More Than Just a Fall Tradition

Every year when apple season rolls around, it reminds me why fall in North Georgia is so special. Ask anyone in Ellijay, and they will tell you that Ellijay is the #1 town known for apples in North Georgia.

One year I forgot about the big APPLE DAY in Ellijay and was heading to Ellijay to show a property, and it normally would be about a 45-minute drive, but it took me over two and a half hours. Why? TRAFFIC.

There’s just something about driving the mountain roads, seeing the orchards busy again, stopping for fresh apples or c***r, and feeling that first little hint of cooler air.
It’s one of those traditions that sounds simple — until it becomes part of your life.
And that’s what I think people fall in love with when they start spending more time in the mountains.

May I remind you that the c***r, apples, and other goodies are SO good. Definitely worth the drive.

It’s not only the mountains or the scenery.
It’s having places you look forward to visiting every year.
It’s recognizing the change of seasons.
It’s local farms, familiar roads, small-town festivals, and traditions that make you feel connected to where you live.

I understand why so many empty nesters are looking for a little more land these days.

I live on a farm here in North Georgia, and there is something about having space around you that is hard to explain until you experience it.

It’s the quiet in the morning.
The trees.
The animals.
The feeling that you can walk outside, breathe, and have a little room between you and the rest of the world.

And interestingly, many of the people I talk with aren’t looking for a bigger house at this stage of life.

They may actually want less house—but more land.

Maybe it’s a couple of acres for privacy. A garden. A workshop. Room for the dogs. A firepit. A creek. A mountain view. Or simply knowing that the neighbor isn’t 20 feet away.

After more than 35 years in real estate, I think one of the biggest changes I see in people at this stage of life is this:

🌾 Farm Stands, Local Produce & the Simple Pleasures of September

One of the things I enjoy most about September in North Georgia is how easy it is to appreciate the simple things.

A roadside farm stand.
Fresh apples.
Local honey.

A basket of vegetables that was grown just a few miles away.

And maybe a beautiful country road you weren’t even planning to take.

That’s part of what I love about living here.

North Georgia isn’t only about mountain views or finding the right house. It’s also about the everyday lifestyle — the little routines and local places that make life feel a bit slower, a bit more personal, and a lot more enjoyable.

September is especially good for that. The weather starts to ease up, the orchards are active, and you can feel fall beginning to show itself.

Sometimes those small moments tell you more about a place than any brochure ever could.
