TN Mountain Bluffs

TN Mountain Bluffs Our mountain properties are rich in Tennessee history. Originally, Higginbotham’s Turnpike was built with a single toll gate.

They are located along the Higginbotham’s Turnpike, the first major road built through the area that was to later become Grundy County. Aaron Higginbotham, a land surveyor and prominent leader in Warren County, built the turnpike in 1821 on the existing “Chickamauga Path”. The road ran from McMinnville, up the mountain, past the current location of Altamont, and on to the present location of Tracy

City before descending the mountain about midway between the present communities of Sequatchie and Jasper. In 1831 the Tennessee General Assembly authorized Aaron Higginbotham to operate his turnpike for 25 years. Then in 1840 he was authorized to install toll gates at each end of the turnpike providing that only half as much toll was collected in each instance at each gate as was allowed by law to be collected at one, and provided also that persons going to or returning from mill, court, or preaching shall not be charged toll at either gate. This road ceased operation as a turnpike in 1848. Evidence of the turnpike still remains today. Blueberry Bluffs, Sunset Bluff and Higginbotham Point is located on Campbell Road, part of the original Higginbotham’s Turnpike.
