Throwback Thursday: How Spanish Land Grants Shaped Florida’s Early Surveys
Did you know that before Florida became part of the United States, it was under Spanish rule? One of the unique challenges early American surveyors faced in the 1800s was incorporating those old Spanish land grants into our modern surveying system. These grants often had boundaries defined by natural features or historic landmarks, which didn’t fit neatly into the grid-like township and range system that the U.S. used.
As a result, the very first formal surveys in Florida were a fascinating blend of old Spanish grants and new American standards. It’s a great reminder of how history leaves its mark on our maps and how far surveying has come since those early days. Happy Throwback Thursday!
