Texas already has no state income tax. Now Governor Abbott is pushing to eliminate school property taxes for homeowners entirely—and it's reshaping the entire financial case for living there.

Here's what's actually happening right now: Texas has already cut $51 billion in property taxes since 2019. The homestead exemption sits at $140,000 for school district taxes. Seniors and disabled homeowners get $200,000. That's real relief, already in place.

But Abbott wants to go bigger. His reelection platform includes a constitutional amendment to abolish school district property taxes for homeowners completely. School taxes make up 50 to 60% of most Texas property tax bills—so this would be massive.

The reality check: The legislature doesn't meet until 2027, so nothing happens overnight. Even Lt. Governor Dan Patrick has reservations. And there's a $17 billion funding gap that needs solving. Political will exists, but it's not locked in yet.

Here's what matters: Texas is quietly becoming the most financially compelling state in America for homeownership. No income tax. Aggressive property tax relief. And a governor running on full elimination. Meanwhile, California, New York, Illinois, and New Jersey are hemorrhaging residents. People vote with their moving trucks—and Texas keeps winning that vote. That's not an accident.
