Need a break from the heat? Head underground.

One of the coolest spots in Amador County (pun intended) is Black Chasm Cavern in Volcano.

It’s a National Natural Landmark with some wild crystal formations and rare helictites that have been growing for thousands of years. Never heard that word in my life by the way until we went.

There are some stairs and a couple tighter spots, but my super pregnant wife and our 3 year old handled it just fine, so unless tight spaces aren’t your thing, you’re probably good.

Great spot for a family day, impressing a hot date knowing the difference between stalactites and stalagmites (cause we know chicks dig cave knowledge) or just getting out of the heat for a couple hours.

Lake Reflection. It’s about 80 feet down from where we’re standing and at times the water is 80ft deep.

Stalactites or Stalagmites?

This is down at the lower deck around 100ft below the surface before you turn back to make the climb back out.

An underrated spot in Amador.

The County Library isn’t just a place to check out books. They’ve got free digital resources, local history, programs for all ages, and even the cool perk of a free California State Parks vehicle day pass you can check out with your library card.

They’re open Monday through Friday, 9 to 5, so if you’re in Jackson, it’s an easy stop to make.

It’s one of those community resources that’s been here all along… we just don’t think about it often enough.

I hear too many people say, “…all there is to do is go bowling in Amador County”. They clearly don’t get out much as that’s not true at all, but even if it was… we wouldn’t be that mad. We always have a good time

Allie and I used to bowl weekly pre kids and got pretty good. Definitely need to shake the rust off after that 111 score. What’s your highest?

If you’re looking for some summer shenanigans with the kids. They’re offering free bowling for kids up to 14 years old Monday through Friday. You just pay for the shoes. Tons of good specials all week plus they have a great arcade, mini golf, pool tables and a full bar so you can grab a nice cold glass of water.
