Sunset Farm
1. Plant our two flats of "Brilliant" Armenian melons in row 32 . Start the planting from the South end of the row and if there is any room left, plant more "yellow doll" watermelon to meet with the half of row planted last night by Connie2 and Naomi.
2. Those that like planting seeds : plant "pinches" of the following seeds in new 48 size flats.
Plant them in fertilized media , if you want to chat and socialize do it sitting around the round table next to the yellow hut. Plant 2 flats each of dill, arugula, basil, cilantro - in small pinches of seed
We will plant out these seedlings as bunches the way we plant the scallions.
3. Install tomato stakes on all the tomatoes in the chestnut field. Shuguang began "weaving" tomatoes yesterday at row 5 She is the expert and will show you how to gracefully handle the weaving wand. There are stakes at the red barn at 150 Fearing st. It is not locked.
4. Jason will feed the squashes in row 58 or so. I think he said the fertilizer injector will do its job in 2 hours/ row. This he determined by over coloring the liquid fertilizer with food coloring.. so you can tell when all the fertilizer has been injected.
YESTERDAY
A : a row of carrots was fertilized
B: the potatoes were sprayed with capt jack organic for the beetles. Ivan did it, I watched.
C: The watermelons are planted and covered.
D: Barbara wrote to say she is back somewhere in the USA , I hope she sends more closeup photos of farming. Barbara Shuman said Iman is coming back from Egypt in mid july ... finally!
E. The drip irrigation is going : all the seedlings and direct seeded rows need to be kept moist.
Every year just at this time , it stops raining for a month. Today is partly cloudy and 54 right now.
We have been very lucky with the temp.. In a couple of weeks the peas will need daily picking : in past years that has been a very hot and buggy time. At least on our farm, you don't have to get down to pick our trellised peas.
IMG_4251.JPG growing flowers also grows lugs of flower display materials.
We have 6 lugs of vases, glasses , goblets stored ..The 24 s prospect st basement is our barn for them . Despite the casual packing, they rarely are broken. Washing them at the farm with our well water will cool your hands. Would you like some?
