Thank you to everybody who called, texted and emailed over the past couple of days, checking on us during the hurricane.

I am happy to report the we are safe and well. The red dot on the photo is roughly the location of our home, where a very violent, slow moving storm passed over us for roughly 11 hours.

Instead of being outside the edge, or getting the eye of the storm, we instead drove straight down the right side of that swirling vortex.

Aside from a snapped-off palm tree, our home took no damage. We escaped flooding, as we are at a higher elevation, (Florida-wise), than the surrounding areas.

A rental we are own approximately 15 miles away was practically demolished, however. To be honest, we could’ve had it much worse and are very blessed, at this point.

Power, water and internet came on for us over the last 12 hours, which is an absolute miracle, given the amount of devastation that has occurred. We are now able to see all of the video that you have been seeing over the past days. As I’ve traveled around the area today, I can confirm that it’s as bad as it looks.

There are a lot of folks out there that really got hammered this week and still need assistance; so if you can, please donate to a reputable hurricane relief organization. I’ll be down here looking to see what I can do to help out, as well. Thanks again for reaching out, folks.

Not every day is picture perfect down here. This time of year is our hurricane season, where every day is sunny and gorgeous until the punctual afternoon thunder and lightning storms come, which are then followed with sunny skies and cooler temperatures for the rest of the day.

However, we currently find ourselves in the path of Hurricane Ian, the trajectory of which changes by the hour. I’ve been through a lot of other disasters, but I think this is my first one of these.

I’ve also gotten to learn a new Florida skill in that regard; putting up hurricane shutters. In fact, over the past two days I have done nine other homes for friends and neighbors who needed an extra hand. It’s brisk, unpleasant work, but if I could bright-side it, I’m pleased that I have sweated off 8 pounds over the last two days. That, and I now get pizza for dinner!

I left the bottom panels off a couple of our windows, (to go up at the last minute), so that we don’t feel like we are enclosed in a dark box. They’ll go up very soon, it appears.

We’ll sure appreciate all your prayers and well-wishes for everybody down here over the next several days.

That’s finally a wrap on the real estate license, which expired a few days back.

Regular visitors to this page know that the RE gig was always meant to be a one-year tour, before moving out of state. I really enjoyed that job and was happy that I surpassed the modest goals I had set for myself, (which are covered in a previous post, if you feel like scrolling).

To all the newer folks who found my page over the past several months and were expecting some fantastic real estate content, but were instead subjected to a puzzling travelogue of me playing golf, drinking beer, reviewing wines, hitting the dog park, going to baseball games and other assorted bits of fun, I say thanks for sticking around.

A lot of friends and family follow me on my other, private account, where I post much more stuff on average. However, in this day and age it’s nice to have a public account for interacting with other public and business accounts. So, if no one minds, I’ll keep throwing photos and posts on here from time to time, sharing all the fun that is to be had living down here in SW Florida, along with other shenanigans.

Even though I am officially out of the business now, if you’re thinking about making a move, reach out to me if you have questions about this great area. Some of you have already and I’m happy to help out anyone else.

Last question; is it time for a name change on the account or leave it as is? If you have a killer one, please send it my way.

Cheers!

Got a text a few days back from one of my old coworkers, who wanted to let me know that this ancient traffic safety poster is still hanging in one of the local schools

I don’t recall the exact year when we did that print campaign, but it feels as though it would have been between 15 to 20 years ago. I had more hair back then. It was brown, if I recall. I may have been thinner, as well.

I remember it was a pretty bright day out, but the photographer said not to wear sunglasses. It was unfair, as Trooper, (at the time; he’s gone onto much bigger things at the office) Betts, got to wear a Smokey the Bear hat.

Regardless, what you see before you was the height of LiDAR technology back then. And my old car; Lucky #48.

At any rate, I am happy to know that I am still up there “at work”, reminding everyone to drive safely around the kids.

On the job, I always tried to make time for the school commutes, in order to let the students and parents know that we were looking out for them. I know my friends up there still are; give them a wave and say hi.

Now, if that poster can just stay up for another 10 - 12 years, it will have had a longer career than I did. 🤞🏼🤞🏼

With as much fun as we have in Fort Myers, occasionally one has to hit the open road and try adventuring in a different city. This past weekend found us up in Tampa for a couple of days, touring the historic Ybor City District and many cigar bars, (both there and throughout the city). Saturday night was capped off with a beyond fantastic dinner at Charley’s steakhouse, which is a long-serving local favorite. Hope you all had a great holiday weekend, as well!

Thank you to my great clients for this very nice review!

As I am wrapping up my license in Washington state soon, I’m glad to go out on a high note with their good comments.

Getting to work with so many fantastic clients has been a real pleasure in this job over the past two years and I consider myself very fortunate.

Congratulations to my clients on the successful purchase of their gorgeous new home in Anacortes!

We had been working on finding the perfect location for almost a year and a half, with me doing a number of Zoom showings around the island, as they were from out of state. Sometimes good things things take a bit longer and our patience was finally rewarded.

I know that they will love their new location with gorgeous views for many years to come. I was certainly honored to help.

Here’s something we never saw in Washington; a large heat lightning storm. It lasted a couple of hours and was a great show while enjoying cocktails on the lanai. (The video is a time-lapse of a 20-minute stretch. )

Our deepest gratitude on this, (and every) day.
