Who’s doing good work for veterans and military families here in Southcentral Alaska?

I want to use this page to introduce the people behind those efforts.

An organization helping families get connected. A professional who takes time to explain the next step. A volunteer group that consistently shows up.

Who should we get to know?

Tag their public business or organization page and tell us what they do. Please keep personal situations and private information out of the comments.

I’d like to learn more about their work and share resources our community can use.

Veteran Service Officers are available statewide to provide free benefit counseling and claim service. VSO's have a compassionate understanding of the problems which confront veterans, their dependents, and survivors. Late October is a good time to ask: what still needs attention around the house before we get deeper into winter?

Start with a short list:

• Heating-system maintenance and filter requirements.
• Exterior hoses and faucets that need winter preparation.
• Drafts around doors and windows.
• Snow-removal arrangements and supplies.

Every home is different. Follow your equipment instructions and bring in a qualified professional when needed.

Alaska Housing has a helpful winter-preparation checklist:

What’s the task you always put off—and are glad you finally handled?

Winter is around the corner and for homeowners, proactivity is key. Before the temperature drops below freezing, now is the time to make sure your home is safe, ready and insulated for the winter months ahead.

A New Mission. The Same Commitment to Serve.

Orders to JBER? You've got enough moving parts already. Figuring out where to live shouldn't add to the confusion.

After 30 years in the Air Force, I understand that a PCS is more than moving your household goods. It's getting your family settled and getting back to work.

Let's talk about your timeline, your commute, and what matters to you in a home. We can work through whether buying or renting makes sense for your situation.

Message me "JBER" and tell me when you're arriving.

The Bohannon Group | LPT Realty loves using The Boardroom! It gives us a professional, comfortable place to meet with clients, review contracts, or simply get some work done between appointments. It’s convenient, welcoming, and a great alternative to meeting at a busy coffee shop.

We love having this resource right here in Anchorage!

Pardon our mess.

Veteran Powered Real Estate is currently under construction.

Over the coming weeks, you’ll see new content, new conversations, and a growing community focused on helping veterans, servicemembers, and military families rediscover purpose, rebuild tribe, and create lasting stability after service.

In the meantime, I’m also preparing my home for sale and getting ready for knee replacement surgery, so progress may not always be fast—but the mission continues.

Thank you for being here at the beginning.

WHY HOMEOWNERSHIP CREATES STABILITY FOR MILITARY FAMILIES

When people talk about homeownership, they usually talk about wealth.

Equity.

Appreciation.

Investment returns.

Those things matter.

But after working with military families for nearly a decade, I’ve come to believe that one of the greatest benefits of homeownership isn’t financial.

It’s stability.

Military families often spend years moving from one duty station to the next.

New schools.

New neighborhoods.

New friends.

New routines.

Every few years, life starts over.

For many servicemembers and veterans, buying a home represents something much deeper than a real estate transaction.

It represents roots.

A place where the kids can grow up.

A place where memories are made.

A place where family gathers for holidays.

A place that belongs to you.

For veterans transitioning out of the military, homeownership can also provide a sense of certainty during a season of change.

The job may change.

The uniform may come off.

The mission may evolve.

But home becomes an anchor.

A place to build the next chapter of life.

That’s one of the reasons I believe homeownership is about more than buying a house.

It’s about creating stability.

And stability creates the foundation for family, purpose, community, and long-term success.

What did homeownership mean to you and your family?

WHY DO SO MANY VETERANS CHOOSE ALASKA?

I’ve often been asked why so many veterans decide to stay in Alaska after leaving military service.

For some, it starts with an assignment.

For others, it’s a PCS move they never expected.

But for many of us, Alaska becomes something more.

The longer I’ve lived here, the more I’ve realized Alaska offers many of the things veterans miss after military service.

Space.

Freedom.

Self-reliance.

Challenge.

Adventure.

And perhaps most importantly—community.

Alaska isn’t always easy.

The winters are long.

The distances are great.

The weather can be unforgiving.

But there is something about this place that attracts people who are resilient, resourceful, and mission-focused.

Maybe that’s why so many veterans feel at home here.

We understand hard work.

We value competence.

We appreciate neighbors who show up when they’re needed.

Whether it’s helping pull a vehicle out of a ditch, supporting a local fundraiser, responding to a family in need, or simply checking on a neighbor during a storm, Alaskans have a way of looking out for one another.

That sense of community feels familiar.

For many veterans, Alaska provides something that can be difficult to find after military service:

A place where independence and belonging can exist at the same time.

I’ve lived in many places throughout my military career, but Alaska is home.

Not because it’s easy.

Because it feels like a place where purpose, service, family, and community still matter.

For those of you who served in Alaska and decided to stay:

What made you call Alaska home?

TRIBE VS. FRIENDSHIP

One of the things that surprised me most after leaving the military was realizing that friendship and tribe are not the same thing.

In civilian life, people often talk about having friends.

In the military, we had something deeper.

We had a tribe.

A tribe is made up of people who share a mission, a purpose, and a commitment to each other that goes beyond convenience.

You train together.

Deploy together.

Celebrate together.

Mourn together.

Suffer together.

You spend holidays away from your families together.

You trust each other with things most people will never understand.

Over time, that shared experience creates a bond that becomes part of your identity.

Then one day, the military chapter ends.

The friendships may remain, but the tribe often disappears.

At least that’s how it felt for me.

When I retired from the Air Force after 30 years, I expected to miss the job.

What I didn’t expect was how much I would miss the people.

Not because we were best friends.

Because we shared a mission.

We belonged to something bigger than ourselves.

In civilian life, it took me years to understand why something felt missing.

I eventually realized I wasn’t looking for more friends.

I was looking for my tribe.

That realization changed everything.

It helped me understand why serving veterans through organizations like VAREP and other veteran-focused initiatives felt so meaningful.

It wasn’t just volunteer work.

It was reconnecting with a community built around service, purpose, and shared values.

That’s one of the reasons Veteran Powered Real Estate exists.

Not simply to help veterans buy and sell homes.

But to help veterans, servicemembers, and military families reconnect with community, purpose, and belonging.

Because while military service eventually ends, the need for tribe never does.

Did you experience something similar after leaving the military?
