It is time to formally organize a landlord association in Alaska, similar to what has been established in other states.

Legislators and local administrations are advancing policies that increasingly mirror those in California and Washington. Whether you agree with every comparison or not, the direction of regulation is clear, and landlords need a constructive, organized presence at the table.

A small group has already been working on the formal process, but we cannot rely solely on a handful of professionals donating spare time to carry the burden for everyone. If we want a voice, we need to build one.

We estimate approximately $25,000 would allow us to establish the legal framework for the organization, provide a modest cushion for advertising and miscellaneous expenses, and, most importantly, secure legal counsel to begin representing landlord interests.

From personal experience, I’ve learned the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If landlords do not organize, we should not be surprised when others shape policy without us.

I was previously involved with a housing advocacy group but left because I believe many of these efforts are focused less on housing affordability and more on making it increasingly difficult to be a landlord. That concern is what motivates this effort.

If there is enough interest from this post, I will connect those interested with the people already working on the organization and with the attorney we have identified, unless others want to step forward and volunteer leadership.

It is time for everyone to pony up and participate. If we want representation, we have to build it.

I’m curious if this is normal, and I’d love some feedback from other homeowners.

I live in a 2,400 sq. ft. home built in the mid-1990s, and I’m not kidding when I say we rarely keep the temperature above 65°. Most of the time it stays at 62°, and when we leave the house, I drop it as low as 60°.
We only have one gas appliance besides the furnace, and it’s the stove, which gets used about once per day.
So can someone help me understand why my heating bill is $407.87? 😳

What does your average heating bill look like?
Square footage?
Age of home?
Average thermostat setting?
Gas vs. electric?
Approximate monthly bill?

I’m genuinely trying to figure out if this is normal or if something seems off.
Please share your numbers with me…. I’d really appreciate the comparison.
