I took 6 months off real estate, and it made me a better agent.
In the middle of 2025, I made a hard decision. I changed my real estate license to inactive. Most of you know that I had been an active real estate agent as well as a consumer loan officer (auto loans, personal loans, home equity loans, etc.) at Veridian Credit Union. I thrived doing both. Halfway through the year, I was offered an amazing opportunity. Veridian offered me a commercial lending position. This was just a few months before our sweet Charlotte was born. I knew this opportunity would come with its fair share of challenges. Learning a new position while raising a newborn? I knew this would be stressful, but I was up for the challenge. During Charlotte’s first few months, I wanted to be as present as possible for Charlotte and for Bekah. This is what prompted me to go temporarily inactive in real estate.
In these past few months, from a lending standpoint, all of the learning felt like I was consuming information and knowledge at the pace of water coming from a fire hydrant. I learned so many more complex sides to finance, lending, and real estate. A majority of what I do now on the commercial lending side is tied to real estate. Although I wasn’t active as an agent, I still communicated with real estate agents nearly daily. I saw the transaction from a different point of view.
I also learned what it is to be a parent. A love that I never could have imagined until I experienced it. A desire to always protect my little girl and give her what’s best. A new type of love and deep respect for my wife. The knowledge of what it is to be a family. Our own little family. I will always provide for them, no matter what.
Now that Charlotte is over 4 months old (crazy I know), I have decided to change my real estate license back to active! This is not to get out of changing diapers. This decision comes from four areas:
1. I want to work diligently to provide for my family to the best of my ability.
2. I found a deeper knowledge and understanding of real estate and a deeper appreciation for family that I know will both be helpful to my clients.
3. I love being helpful. Answering the same questions that I had when I was buying my first house and second house has got to be one of the best feelings. You can be 99% sure that your questions won’t annoy me.
4. I miss being an agent! Real estate can be adventurous and beautiful. I absolutely love showing houses, finding what people like and don’t like, and closing on a home. Whether it’s a first home, a rental property, or a dream home, I love being part of the process.
That all being said, maybe now isn’t the best time for you and your family to buy or sell a house. That is 100% okay. You know your timing better than anyone else. Just know that I will be there for you when you have questions. No pressure. I’m just here to help.
TLDR: I took half a year off real estate, got into commercial lending, and we now have a daughter. I learned more about real estate through commercial lending and being a family man, so now I am going back to being an active agent!
