When No Other Means Exist

“A take on KFAR (AM) Radio Business” (1967) (Radio World, Sept. 11), I was 19 stationed with the US Army at Fort Greely, AK and painfully learned a lesson about the relevancy of local news. (1967)

A Saturday evening show called “Tundra Topics” indirectly announced messages to outdoorsmen in the bush, who otherwise had no conventional means of communication. (It was long before the days of cellphones.) Because of FCC rules, each commercial radio had to be prefaced, EXAMPLE “If John Jones is listening, then he would be interested to know the following …” They were usually telephoned to the station and of routine substance.

One night, just prior to the show’s airing, a caller reported that the brother of a man beyond verbal contact had drowned that day in the Fairbanks River. “We have no way to reach him except via ‘Tundra Topics,’” the caller said.

These were the most challenging and emotional words I have spoken into a microphone. I remember it almost 60 years later.

FOR 35 CONSECUTIVE YEARS (1926-1961) the Dixboro Church raised funds by feeding hungry U-M football fans returning from Ann Arbor. The serving featured a home-cooked, country-style chicken dinner with all the fixings in the church fellowship hall. Church member Jennie Henry would often bake 35 pies for each chicken dinner. That's equal to five touchdowns and five extra points. Go Blue! (the dedicated ladies are shown posting a promotional sign below)

Q: In 1936, eight-year-old Ernie Ireman of the hamlet of Dixboro, MI attended his first youth choir practice of the Dixboro Methodist Episcopal Church. It was held upstairs, above the 1840 Dixboro General Store, Plymouth @ Cherry Hill Roads, which remains open today.

The choir director was the wife of the church pastor, John Luther. Later, Ernie surprised his parents by insisting he would not attend the choir practice the following week. Why?

A: From his perch above in the second floor practice room, through a window he saw Mrs. Luther conversing in the parking lot below smoking a cigarette. Ernie was known as the "egg man" and delivered eggs to the Dixboro residents from his family farm.
