The Sound of Danger: Why a Glacier National Park Hike Ended in a Bear Attack.
When we hike in bear country, we usually think about keeping our eyes peeled. But it turns out, what you can't hear is just as dangerous.
A 32-year-old hiker was trekking up the famous Grinnell Glacier Trail in Glacier National Park when he suddenly met a grizzly bear on a snowfield. The bear charged, breaking the hiker’s arm before running off.
The "Surprise" Factor:
The National Park Service called this a classic "surprise encounter." The two met right next to a rushing stream. The roar of the water was so loud that neither the bear nor the hiker heard each other coming until they were face-to-face.
When surprised at close range, a grizzly's instinct is often to attack first and ask questions later.
The Golden Rules of Bear Country:
This marks the second serious bear incident in the park recently. If you are heading out on the trails, remember these safety tips:
Make Noise: Clap, shout, or talk loudly—especially near loud water or thick brush so you don't surprise a bear.
Travel in Groups: Bears are much less likely to approach a crowd.
Carry Bear Spray: Keep it somewhere you can grab it in two seconds flat.
