After a contentious three-hour meeting March 24, the Anna Maria City Commission unanimously voted to require residents and visitors to obtain a free “Sunset Viewing Permit” before gathering at any beach access point 6-9 p.m., citing what officials called an “unsustainable burden” on the island’s western shoreline.
The measure, which passed with surprisingly little procedural drama, represents one of the most significant regulatory actions the commission has taken toward preserving the island’s natural amenities.
Commissioners echoed one another as they celebrated a mutual love for sunsets but lamented the overcrowded beaches. Several referred to the successful launch of a similar program at Santa Monica State Beach in California.
