Renewable Energy is Doable

Severn Management Company of Annapolis, Maryland, announced today that as of January 2020 their corporate offices, and 42 of their 97 multifamily apartment facilities, across four states are now powered by 100% renewable (wind and solar) electricity. In 2015 Severn Management Company (Severn) moved to 20% renewable (wind) electricity. In April an additional group of multifamily apartment facilities will also transition to 100% renewable electricity.
Where possible, Severn’s transition to renewable electricity has been delivered through Power Purchase Agreements. Elsewhere Severn has purchased Renewable Energy Certificates – openly-traded certificates linked to renewable electricity generation.
Severn is also investing in energy efficiency programs to reduce the energy usage at their multifamily apartment facilities. As funding is available apartment facilities are being renovated to Enterprise Green Communities standards. Elsewhere energy efficiency programs are making improvements in insulation, HVAC, hot water, and lighting.
Spencer Leech, VP at Severn, said:
“Climate change is one of the most urgent challenges we’re all facing. We have worked hard to secure renewable energy for our sites. There is more work to do, but renewable is doable.”

We are heartbroken as another mass shooting occurred in America. To simply say those words is to admit how familiar these terrifying tragedies have become. Yet, they always seem to take place somewhere else.

This week, that somewhere else was our backyard, in Annapolis, Maryland, the land of pleasant living.

As longtime residents of and business people in this capital community on the Chesapeake, we’re as shaken as we are perplexed.

We may never know the full story of what motivates such a senseless act. However, this we do know: we live here; we work here; we send our kids to school here; and we get our news here. Tomorrow will be another day, and Annapolis will emerge from this tragic loss closer and stronger.

In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Capital Gazette Communications and their families, as well as the authorities who responded so quickly and so decisively.
