Mortgage rates have stabilized near record lows but rates could fall even further this year. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage inched up to an average of 2.87% this week from 2.86% the prior week. With the Fed to hold interest rates steady at near zero percent through 2023 under its new flexible inflation target strategy, mortgage rates are expected to reach new record lows. Members of the Federal Reserve Committee met on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 15-16, 2020.
The Committee decided to keep the target range for the federal funds rate at 0 to 1/4 percent and expects it will be appropriate to maintain this target range until labor market conditions have reached levels consistent with the Committee's assessments of maximum employment and inflation has risen to 2 percent and is on track to moderately exceed 2 percent for some time.
