This Week in Florida History (September 5 – 12)

September 5, 1836: Florida's first steam-powered railroad made its inaugural run between the Apalachicola River and the boomtown of St. Joseph. The eight-mile line carried 300 passengers and helped demonstrate how transportation could drive economic growth. Railroads would eventually become one of the most important forces behind Florida's development, connecting agricultural communities, ports and emerging cities while opening the state to tourism and residential growth.
