5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Moving to North Carolina

If I could go back and talk to myself before moving to North Carolina, there are definitely a few things I wish someone had told me.

The number of neighborhoods and communities to choose from surprised me. The healthcare is incredible. I spend a LOT less time sitting in traffic. And weekends here feel completely different.

But the biggest one?

I wish I’d done it sooner.

If you’re thinking about moving to North Carolina, I’d be happy to share what I’ve learned and help you figure out if it’s the right move for you.

Moving to North Carolina: Should You Rent First or Buy Right Away?

There are times when renting first absolutely makes sense.

But if you’re planning to stay, you’ve done your homework, and you’re ready to buy, waiting a year or two simply because you’re nervous about making the move can end up costing you more than you expected.

There isn’t one right answer. It depends on your job, your timeline, your finances, and what makes sense for you.

My job isn’t to tell you what to do. It’s to help you make the decision that’s right for you.

Thinking about moving to North Carolina? Let’s talk.

The right house in the wrong neighborhood is still the wrong house.

When you’re moving to a new area, it’s easy to start by scrolling through homes and deciding what you like.

But before bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage, there’s a much more important question:

How do you want to live?

Commute, parks, restaurants, schools, things to do. Those are the things you’ll experience every single day long after the excitement of the new house wears off.

That’s why I help my relocation clients choose the area first and the house second.

If you’re thinking about moving to the Triangle, tell me what matters most to you and I’ll help you figure out where to start.

Thinking about moving to North Carolina? Here’s something I tell my clients all the time.

Don’t start with the house.

You can find a house you absolutely love and still realize the neighborhood doesn’t fit the way you want to live.

The commute, parks, restaurants, schools… all of that matters.

That’s why one of my first conversations with clients isn’t about bedrooms and bathrooms. It’s about how you want to live.

Because the right house in the wrong neighborhood is still the wrong house.

One of the biggest differences I noticed after moving here is the pace of life.

It’s hard to explain until you experience it. Things just feel a little less rushed. You have a little more room to breathe, enjoy where you are, and actually notice what’s around you.

I didn’t realize how much I would appreciate that until I lived here.

What about you? Would you rather live somewhere that moves fast, or somewhere life moves at a little easier pace?

Do I ever regret moving to North Carolina?

People have asked me that more than once.

There were plenty of reasons we made the move. The house, the cost of living, the lifestyle… but none of those were the moment I knew we’d made the right decision.

That came later.

It was watching my daughter fall in love with horseback riding. Watching my son make friends, play soccer, and seeing both of them have more time to simply be kids.

That’s when I realized we didn’t simply move to a different state.

We gave our family a different lifestyle.

And honestly, I don’t think there’s a better gift you can give your kids.

Thinking about moving to the Triangle? I’d be happy to help.

You call this traffic? 😂

Every once in a while, I hear someone in the Triangle say, “Traffic was terrible today.”

And I just smile.

After spending more than 20 years driving the 405, the 101 and the 5 in Southern California, my definition of traffic might be a little different.

Here, people are usually talking about arriving 5 or 10 minutes late. In Los Angeles, there were days when a few miles could completely change your plans.

Is there traffic in the Triangle? Of course.

But if you’re moving here from a bigger metro area, you might be pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to get around most days.

And trust me… you may find yourself smiling too.

Thinking about moving to the Triangle? I’d be happy to help.

Healthcare wasn’t even on my list when we moved to North Carolina.

Like most people relocating, I was thinking about the house, the schools, the cost of living, the commute and the lifestyle.

Then life happened.

Shortly after we moved here, I was diagnosed with lymphoma, and suddenly something I had barely considered became incredibly important: access to great healthcare.

Living in the Triangle means having Duke, UNC, WakeMed and an incredible network of medical professionals right here in our community.

It’s something I never thought about before we moved.

Today, it’s one of the things I’m most grateful for.

This is Episode 3 of Moving to North Carolina | Season 2.

If you’re considering a move to the Triangle, or you know someone who is, feel free to share this series with them.
