A very important reminder as our community begins recovering from the storm:
Please verify information before you share it.
In the aftermath of a disaster, inaccurate posts can spread incredibly quickly, and they can interfere with legitimate cleanup and rescue efforts, send volunteers to the wrong locations, or put already-vulnerable people at even greater risk.
Unfortunately, there are also people who will use situations like this to gain clicks, grow their following, solicit fraudulent donations, or take advantage of families who are desperate for help. It makes me angry that this even needs to be said, but we all need to be vigilant.
Before sharing a post, donation request, volunteer opportunity, contractor recommendation, or rescue update:
✔️Confirm that it came from local officials, emergency management, law enforcement, or an established relief organization.
✔️Check when it was posted as conditions and needs can change quickly.
✔️Verify donation links before sending money.
✔️Don’t share names, addresses, photos, or personal circumstances without permission.
✔️If you can’t confirm that the information is accurate, please don’t amplify it.
There are so many people who genuinely want to help right now. Let’s make sure our help reaches the people who need it, and that we aren’t unintentionally spreading misinformation or giving opportunists a larger platform.
Pause. Verify. Then share. Our community deserves that level of care. ❤️
