👩⚡ Women Homebuyers Rule: Here’s Where They Own More Homes Than Men—and the Surprising Reasons Why

Even though women still earn 83 cents for every dollar made by men, they trump men in another key financial area: owning a home.

A LendingTree analysis of the latest (2022) U.S. Census Bureau data finds that more single women than single men own homes. Overall, single women own 2.71 million more homes than single men, an increase of 70,000 homes from 2021.

Single women lead the homeownership charge in all but three states: Alaska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Given that women still lag behind men in terms of salary and overall wealth, why are they ahead in the homeownership game?

In short: It’s just more important to women.

January 2024 Stats 📊

As we kick off the new year, buyers appear to be wearing rose-colored glasses, ready to put themselves back in the real estate market as they finally have more choices. New listings increased 14.73. Pending home sales increased 6.5 percent, while median days in MLS increased 5.88 percent to 36 days. Closed sales lagged by 6.26 percent; however, this isn't all that surprising as this number trails by a month highlighting homes that sold in January that went under contract in December. Saying that, this time of year I prefer to compare the numbers from last January to this January as December is traditionally our lowest month of inventory, resulting in highly skewed numbers such as an increase of 89.92 percent in new listings month-over-month.

This month's big news is that the Fed did not adjust interest rates. As a result, we likely won't see an adjustment until spring at the earliest.

For buyers, the gift this season is growing inventory. Active listings at month’s end increased 6.89 percent year-over-year to 6,684 and new listings rose slightly by 1.04 percent to 2,717.

Sellers aren’t left in the cold this season as they have some gifts coming their way as well. They have time to prepare their homes and mindset for the marketplace as homes are taking longer to sell. The median days in the MLS has grown to 22 days, which is up an astounding 37.50 percent month-over-month.
