THIS IS ARCADIA.

September 1970.

A headline in The Arcadian read:

"Only Four Days Left."

Just a few more days of summer before it was time to trade fishing poles for notebooks, tennis shoes for loafers, and a can of bait for a lunch bucket.

The young man in this photo was making the most of those final days before the school bells rang.
Does anyone know who this young man is? We'd love to know his story.

More than 55 years later, a lot has changed.
Lunch buckets have become backpacks.
Notebooks have become tablets.
But one thing never changes...
The excitement of a new school year.

And standing at the center of it all will be the DeSoto County Courthouse.

Built in 1912–1913, this landmark has watched over Arcadia for more than a century. It has seen world wars, hurricanes, floods, economic highs and lows, and generations of families call DeSoto County home.

Sometimes progress is messy.

But some landmarks remind us who we are.

We may be a little biased, but we think our courthouse is one of the most beautiful historic courthouses in Florida.

THIS IS ARCADIA.

Have you noticed one of Arcadia's historic landmarks is getting a facelift?

The City Hall building, completed in 1926, has stood in the heart of downtown for nearly a century. Built in the Mediterranean Revival style during Florida's land boom, it has served as City Hall, housed the fire department, and even included the city jail.

Long before the building was constructed, the site was a pineapple patch purchased by the City in 1917 for $3,000.

It's great to see this piece of Arcadia's history receiving some well-deserved attention as work continues to preserve it for future generations.
