Last year, you all helped us take A Land Remembered far beyond what we ever imagined. Teachers, Extension agents, agricultural organizations, parents, producers, and friends shared the program across Florida — and it took off.

Can we do it again? 🌴🐄📚

Registration is wrapping up for A Land Remembered: Where Cattle, Conservation, and Beef Come Together! — a 6-week classroom program for 4th grade, 5th grade, middle AND high school students!

Using Patrick D. Smith’s A Land Remembered, students get to experience Florida’s history while connecting it to the agriculture and natural resources that still shape our state today.

✈️🇺🇸 DID YOU KNOW ARCADIA WAS ONCE A TRAINING GROUND FOR WAR PILOTS?

One of my favorite things about living in Arcadia is how much history is tucked away here.

Long before the roads, ranches and farms we know today, the skies around Arcadia were filled with military training aircraft.

During World War I, the U.S. Army established two aviation training fields near Arcadia - Carlstrom Field and Dorr Field. They were named after two aviators who lost their lives in 1917.

And then came World War II.

As the United States prepared for another war, both fields came back to life. Dorr Field, located about 11 miles east of Arcadia, reopened in 1942 as a flight training school operated by the Riddle Aeronautical Institute. Young men were being trained there to become Army aviators…flying Stearman training planes over the wide-open Florida grasslands.

❌ No paved runways.

Dorr Field wasn’t just about American pilots either. British Royal Air Force cadets trained right here in DeSoto County, preparing to serve overseas. More than 1,300 British RAF trainees received instruction at Carlstrom and Dorr Fields during World War II.

Twenty-three RAF cadets who died while in the United States are buried right here in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia, where their service is still remembered. 🇬🇧🇺🇸

After the war, the fields were eventually sold to the State of Florida for just $1.

Today, much of what remains of these historic sites has been repurposed, and you can drive through parts of the area without ever realizing that you’re traveling through a place that once played a small but meaningful role in American and British military aviation history.

That’s the thing about Arcadia…

You don’t have to look very far to find history.

Sometimes it’s downtown.
Sometimes it’s an old building.
Sometimes it’s a cemetery.
And sometimes… it’s a field where airplanes once took off for war. ✈️🇺🇸
