This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the Native peoples who have called this extraordinary stretch of Northern California home since time immemorial — and who continue to live here, care for these lands, protect its waters, and carry their cultures forward today.

Around Humboldt Bay and the Arcata area, we are on the ancestral homeland of the **Wiyot people**, whose relationship with the bay, ocean, rivers, forests, and wildlife stretches back thousands of years.

Farther north through Orick, the Klamath River and the redwood parks, travelers enter **Yurok ancestral lands** — a landscape of redwood forests, rivers, prairies and coastline that remains deeply connected to Yurok culture and stewardship.

These are not simply stories of the past. The Wiyot and Yurok are living Tribal Nations whose people continue to restore lands, protect ecosystems, strengthen their communities and preserve cultural traditions for future generations.

As visitors to the Redwood Coast, we have the privilege of experiencing an incredibly beautiful place — and a responsibility to travel through it with respect.
