At the time, her big sister Bella Star was only three years old. Standing on this block brings back a flood of memories from those early days—the stroller sessions, the neighbors, and the deep roots we planted. It’s a powerful reminder of why I love what I do.

The typical new American house peaked at 2,467 square feet in 2015. By 2025 it had shrunk to 2,142 square feet. Before that, new houses had grown for four decades, from 1,525 square feet in 1973. The strip at the top of the chart shows the median size of a new house; the colored bands below show the share of new single-family houses built each year in each size range.

Small houses have barely come back. Houses under 1,200 square feet made up 18% of new homes in 1978 and just 2% in 2021; today they are 5%. Most of the shrinking has come from the largest houses getting smaller.
