Rust and a slow leak up top on a water heater usually means something’s failing underneath. Most people assume that’s just an old-house problem.

It’s not. New construction runs tighter, closed systems, and city water pressure doesn’t always match what the tank was built to handle. Add heat, add pressure, and that tank has nowhere to send the extra. That’s what leads to a burst, not just age.

A pressure-reducing valve keeps that pressure from building up in the first place. A lot cheaper than finding out the hard way.
If your water heater’s more than a few years old (new house or not) get the pressure checked before it tells you itself.

Recovered from a customer’s garbage disposal (in order of confusion): two butts of a cucumber, a chunk of carrot, the bottom of a water bottle, and a rusted fork with no ends (?)

The disposal did not ask for any of this. It has a blade, not a stomach.

How do you tell what your disposal can handle vs. what costs you a service call?

Potato peels, noodles, grease, rice all seem harmless going down but they’re also how we end up under your sink.

Best rule: keep it to plate residue, and even then, the least amount possible. Less down there means a disposal that lasts longer.

If your water heater has never been flushed, this is what’s been sitting at the bottom of the tank.

Some people hate how ‘soft’ water actually feels. Here’s the fix:

Softener makes water actually soft—that silky, almost slimy feel on your skin. That’s real softening, and some folks love it, some folks can’t stand it.

Conditioner skips that feeling entirely. Water just doesn’t stick around long enough to leave spots on your shower glass or scale in your kettle. Same result on your fixtures, different feel on you.

Softener does the job a little more thoroughly. Conditioner does it without the slip.

Neither one’s wrong, it’s just what you want your water to feel like coming out of the tap.
