Mansfield City Council approved the Katherine Rose Memorial Park Phase 2 improvement project to move into the final design stage tonight, with construction documents anticipated as early as next month. Work will begin in fall on the *long-awaited* expansion, which will add a variety of amenities to the under-utilized soccer fields across Walnut Creek Drive.
The new space will include:
☑️ Basketball, sand volleyball, tennis and pickleball courts
☑️ Expanded parking on the south
☑️ Tiered spectator seating built into the natural topography
☑️ Two restroom facilities and two large pavilions (one on each side of Magnolia St)
☑️ Looped walking trail
☑️ 40-yard dash training track
☑️ Covered fitness plaza with multiple exercise stations
☑️ Ninja fitness court
Construction is expected to begin in early fall and be complete by late Summer/Fall 2027! Two practice soccer fields are in development in a new location to replace these fields; those will be open to the public before construction begins to avoid any disruption in service.
Like most Mansfield park projects, this expansion is funded by our half-cent sales tax, which was approved by voters in 1992 to fund park development and expansion without impact to general fund (property taxes.)
Like ALL Mansfield park projects, this project was designed based on the feedback we heard from residents in our master plan public engagement efforts, both in 2020 and 2025.
Expanded recreation opportunities, more options for teens and adults to work out/hang out, and more free, on-demand ways to play were all high priorities from residents in recent years, and we're thrilled to deliver all of those requests and much more with this new, incredibly remarkable, space very soon!
P.S: We apologize for any confusion, but certainly did not mean to imply the soccer fields are not used. They are, and that’s why we’re replacing them before construction begins so there is no disruption in service! By UNDERutilized, we mean that this design has the potential to reach more users and at more hours of the day. The soccer fields are largely only used on weekends and evenings, but we anticipate the new park will be active throughout the day, serving a much wider range of ages and interests. The fields are not unused, just not used as often as they could be, hence the reimagining! 😉
