Artemis/Harris Teeter Community Meeting
I want to thank everyone who attended last night’s Harris Teeter community meeting. The turnout was around 28 people in person and on Zoom.
Harris Teeter Survey: There was general agreement that we should try to get other residential and businesses to distribute the survey. The result should show that it is not just the Eclipse that wants the space to remain a grocery store.
Artemis: There was also agreement that we need to establish a dialogue with Artemis. At this point Artemis has not filed with the county. The Eclipse needs to be ready to respond when they do file. By maintaining a dialogue, we hopefully will have prior notice of their filing and a better understanding of their proposed solution to Harris Teeter’s closing. The Communications Committee will handle this dialogue. Plus, we are not relying on Artemis to notify the Eclipse of their filing. Mary Rawlings-Milton, Communications Committee chair, has signed up to receive zoning, planning commission and other filings from the county.
County: Because Artemis hasn’t filed with the county, the Eclipse can’t formally contact the county to plead our case. Residents can contact the county but their concerns will not be as effective if it is done before Artemis files their request. However, we can prepare a draft letter from the board and draft language for residents to use if they want to file with the county individually.
Lastly, if we lose the fight to keep this a grocery store, Artemis can rent that space to anyone. By maintaining a dialogue with Artemis, the Eclipse may be able to influence what retailer ends up in that space. To that end, we need to develop a listing of what we want to see in that the space.
We need volunteers to:
• Develop comprehensive list of grocery stores,
• Identify ways to improve the site's appeal to grocery stores,
• Attend county meetings (These are in person or via Zoom),
• Draft letter from Board to County and generic language for residents,
• Help with Survey administration and data analysis,
• Develop acceptable alternatives to a grocery store (as a contingency plan), and
• Investigate joining or creating a local civic association (independent from the Unit Owner Association)

Any updates on this issue will be shared as soon as practical. The next meeting has not been scheduled at this time.
