The long weekend is here, and there is plenty happening around the DMV. Here are seven ideas if you are still deciding what to do:

1. Start fall early with apple picking, a corn maze, wagon rides, and pig races at Great Country Farms in Bluemont, Sept. 5–7.

2. Head to The Wharf for DC JazzFest, with live music on multiple stages Sept. 5–6.

3. Watch Highland athletics, dancing, piping, and drumming at the Virginia Scottish Games in The Plains, Sept. 5–6.

4. Check out hundreds of classic and custom vehicles at the Fairfax Labor Day Car Show, Sept. 7 from 8 a.m.–2 p.m.

5. Bring a chair to National Harbor for a free waterfront performance by the U.S. Army Band, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.

6. Visit USAA’s temporary National Military Monument at the Lincoln Memorial, honoring more than 41 million American service members.

7. Or keep it simple and squeeze in one last pool day before many local pools close for the season.

It’s hard to beat a closing that brings an old friend back into your life. 💙

Kelly and I first worked together on a real estate transaction back in 2014, when she was the lender and I was still early in my real estate career. She’s also a West Point graduate, like my husband, so we’ve shared plenty of mutual friends and connections over the years.

Today, I had the privilege of helping Kelly and her husband, Dan, close on their new home as they relocate from Alabama to Arlington, Virginia.

And what a home it is! They’re moving into a beautiful 1920s American Foursquare filled with original charm and character, right in Ballston, one of Arlington’s most walkable and sought-after neighborhoods.

Helping an old friend make her way back to Northern Virginia was incredibly meaningful.

A PCS to the DC area can feel overwhelming before you even start looking at homes. There are so many communities to choose from, and so much to figure out in a short amount of time.

As a military spouse, I know how many decisions come with a move. Where should we live? What will the commute really be like? How far will our BAH go? And if you have kids, what do you need to know about schools, boundaries, registration and childcare?

In Northern Virginia, your home search often comes down to three things: price, space and commute. You may be able to get two, but finding all three can be tough.

And for families with children, getting a head start on school and childcare research can make a big difference, especially when you’re arriving around the beginning of the school year.

Taking some time to understand the area and decide what matters most to your family can make the whole process feel a lot more manageable.

For military families, goodbyes are nothing new.

We’ve packed boxes, changed schools, moved across states and countries, watched friendships begin and end, and learned how to make a new place feel like home.

But dropping a child off at college?

That goodbye feels different. ❤️

You spend years teaching them how to adapt, be independent, meet new people, and find their way in unfamiliar places. And then suddenly, all those skills military kids learned growing up are exactly the ones they’re taking with them as they start this next chapter.

To all the parents unloading cars, making one last Target run, setting up dorm rooms, and trying to hold it together when it’s finally time to drive away… I see you.

And to the military kids starting college this fall: You’ve been preparing for new beginnings your whole life.
