Happy New Year to everyone!
Here is my hot list of things to do in January 2024!
January 4th-7th
This is the First Friday of the month and of the year! Perhaps you'll want to join the festivities in Grand Center where you'll find all the galleries and museums free and open to the public! You might also want to head over to Foundry Art Center in St. Charles. Where all are welcome to spend some time enjoying the galleries, meeting resident studio artists, and basking in their wide array of art programming, entertainment, and special events.
While you're in Grand Center, you might as well head over to Jazz St. Louis to check out one of Chicago’s most thrilling young trumpeters, composers, and bandleaders, Marquis Hill, who will bring his contemporary and classic jazz, hip-hop, R&B, Chicago house, neo-soul to the stage!
If you made it St. Charles, perhaps you'll want to stay to see comedian Jeff Heffron at The Funny Bone Streets of St. Charles.
Helloooooo! This is the last weekend to check out Mrs. Doubtfire at the Fabulous Fox Theater? You might not want to miss out on your chance to see it before it's gone!
Did you know that January 7th is National Harlem Globetrotters Day? Well, it is, and you can celebrate a day early because on January 6th the Harlem Globe Trotters will be coming to the Enterprise Center. This is an event that is sure to keep you bouncing out of your seat!
On Sunday from 1pm - 3pm, how about heading over to Chico's Bakery on Cherokee Street for their Dia de Los Reyes celebration? In Mexico, January 7th, or the Day of the Three Kings, is typically celebrated with gift giving and sharing in a delicious, sweet bread called a rosca. At Chico's, they are doing just that with free toys for the kids, pictures with the 3 Wisemen, bicycle raffles, meeting Fredbird, grocery giveaways, and of course lots and lots of roscas!
January 8th - 14th
On Monday nights Big River Running Company hosts a group run at both their South City and University City locations. Meeting at 5:45pm runners and walkers of all ages, abilities, and fitness levels are welcome to sprint on over and join in the fun!
Tuesday is a great day to flock on over to The Stifle Theater and watch as Aaron Sorkin's adaptation of Harper Lee's timeless classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, comes to life! You won't want to miss the opportunity to witness this production's stop in St. Louis while on their national tour.
If you know me, you know I love St. Louis! This Wednesday you can enjoy some STL history at the Urban Archaeology Lost Buildings of St. Louis exhibit at the Pulitzer Art Foundation. There you can witness a rich collection of salvaged architectural elements from landmark buildings, residential homes, and neighborhood institutions built in St. Louis from 1840-1950.
On January 11th the Grammy Award-Winning Rebirth Brass Band will be blowing the house down at the City Winery. Their trademark sound pays homage to the New Orleans Brass Band tradition while adding elements of jazz, funk, soul, R&B, and sounds of the streets they grew up on.
Saturday is looking like a great opportunity to head on over to the Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL and take a trip through jazz-mad Europe. The performers' sassy music is a testament to their appreciation for American jazz the program will end with the honking horns and swaggering tunes of George Gershwin’s An American in Paris.
Jump into the weekend at the Contemporary Art Museum for Justin Favela: Ruta Madre. This Las Vegas-based artist will present his solo exhibition on the CAM's Project Wall. His vibrant large-scale murals and sculptures are inspired by art history, community. celebration, pop-culture, and his Mexican-Guatemalan upbringing.
Did you know that January 14th is National Dress Up Your Dog Day? Bar K's Winter Formal for Dogs may just be the perfect event for your furry friend to wear that new outfit that might be hanging in their closet. They will be having a Red Carpet, giveaways, and of course you get to vote for the Winter Formal's King and Queen!
January 15th - 21st
January 15th is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Head downtown for the March from the Old Courthouse or join the Missouri History Museum Community Celebration. The United Way has several ways for you to participate in Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Also, O'Fallon offers the chance to get involved with their 16th annual MLK Day of Service.
Tuesday marks the second day of Clayton's Restaurant Week. Where all week long participating Clayton Restaurants will be featuring a specific three-course, pre-fixed CRW menu during their dinner hours. Use this week to check out some of your local favorites or discover something new!
Every Wednesday the Be Well Cafe hosts a Farmers Market Bazaar, open from 3 pm - 7 pm. Use this Wednesday to check out their locally grown produce, pastries, artesian food and vendors, live entertainment, and more!
Start your engines and drive on over the America's Center and the Dome, because on January 18th the STL Auto Show is rolling into town. They will be featuring over 500 new cars, pickup trucks, and SUV's from more than 25 manufacturers. They will also be featuring a ride-and-drive event, a free kid zone, drifting, and even pet adoptions!
January 19th is the first day The Lemp Mansion will be featuring their event A Fistful of Hollars. This interactive dinner theater show will include a tasty three-course meal, and an evening full of good laughs, murder, mayhem, and mystery. Will you figure out who dun it?
On Saturday The Loop will be hosting their 17th annual Ice Carnival. The event starts at 11 am where you will be able to view the over 40 ice sculptures, participate in their ice cube giveaway and temporary tattoo scavenger hunt, see live ice carving demonstrations, and so much more! This event is sure to be a brrrr-unch of fun!
This Sunday, Das Bevo is hosting two events to help you round out the weekend. Start your day with their Yoga Buzz, where those of all levels of yoga experience are welcomed. Then head upstairs for brunch and bottomless mimosas featuring live music by Kevin Buckley!
January 22nd - 28th
Wangechi Mutu is a Kenyan American artist. Her exhibit My Cave Call will be housed at the St. Louis Art Museum. Her expansive body of work boasts a collection of mythical creatures, and surreal landscapes, and explores topics such as femininity and globalization.
This year why not pick up on a new hobby? How about fine-tuning a special skill? Well at the Central Dance Studio, you can get down with one of the classes they offer every Tuesday night. From Ballet 101 to Hip Pop, they've got something for everyone to get groovy to!
Everyone can appreciate the finer things in life, and at WAG: An Exhibition for Dogs at the Foundry Arte Center your canine besty can do just that. The exhibit will feature artwork in a dog-friendly color spectrum and placed at appropriate heights for your furry friend's viewing pleasure. There will also be interactive sculptures, art activities for your dogs, and a silent auction on artisanal dog bowls.
On the 26th be prepared for a night of unwavering talent and originality at Diamond Hall's lineup of Powerhouse bands: The Breakdowns, Chronyx, The Ricters, and Daydreamer! Join us for an evening that celebrates the diverse sounds and creativity of these incredible, homegrown musicians.
Saturday has something for everyone! Down in Soulard, you can find some friendly competition and lots of good food at their Mardi Gras Cajun Cook-Off. Here talented amateur cooks will face off preparing some of their best dishes for the panel of hungry judges. The event will also include, live music, cooking and mixology demonstrations, and more!
St. Charles's Historic Main Street will be hosting their Fete de Glance Ice Carving Competition. Marvel as Ice carvers take their chainsaws, chisels, and hot irons to blocks of ice weighing up to 260 lbs. You will also be able to find fire pits and many local restaurants serving breakfast and lunch.
The Bald Eagle is a majestic symbol of the United States. January 28th is a great chance to meet these noble creatures up close and personal because the Pere Marquette Lodge and Conference Center is hosting their Bald Eagle Festival. Birds, unique vendors, fan-favorite restaurants, specialty drinks, and family fun!
January 29th - 31st
January 29th is the second day of the Missouri Botanical Garden's Orchid Show. Take this Monday to experience the Garden's vast orchid collection, which includes over 6,000 individual plants and nearly 700 unique kinds of orchids. Seeing as many of these plants come from California, South Africa, Western Australia, Chile, and the Mediterranean, you'll be traveling the world without ever leaving St. Louis!
As they do every Tuesday, Schlafly will be hosting their Trivia Night at both their Bottle Works and Tap Room locations. The perfect opportunity to grab a drink and pour out all that knowledge!
On Wednesday, how about heading over to the Cardinal's Nation Restaurant and Bar for Family Nights with Fredbird? There they will be hitting all the bases from food, games, prizes, and Fredbird running around! Oh, and did I mention that kids eat free?
