Devil's Thumb Residence — Semple Brown Design
Nestled in the pines outside Fraser, Colorado, the Devil's Thumb Residence is fully integrated into its surroundings with stone and wood, drawing on the vernacular of humble cabins and outbuildings. Designed by Semple Brown, the home evolved from the concept of a family cabin that grew over the years through a series of additions aligned along an east-west axis, responding to the views and contours of the site.
Bedrooms and private spaces bookend an open-plan living, kitchen, and dining area, where the owners can gather at the stone fireplace immersed in the changing seasons of the valley and mountains just outside. Grays and blacks are offset by the warmth of golden cedar, white ash, and buff granite — with expansive windows framing the dramatic views beyond.
This is the kind of project we point to when we talk about what "in harmony with the land" actually means. Every home is sited to respond to its specific terrain, using native, high-quality materials that weather naturally into the landscape rather than resist it.
Where Canyon Pines pushes further is sustainability performance: our guidelines ask every home to consider passive solar orientation, high-performance building envelopes, and low-impact water strategies from day one — not as an afterthought, but as a design constraint baked into the DRC review process from the first site analysis.
