Science! We all know that heat rises but there's more to it. A liquid - in our case, air - will move in a couple of predictable ways. It will always move from high pressure to low pressure, and it will always move from hot to cold (all other things being equal).

In the winter, a furnace blows up the house like a balloon, providing both the temperature and pressure difference. In the summer, an attic gets extremely hot - sometimes 130 degrees! - and that heat pressurizes the attic space. So now where does that hot attic air want to go? Right into your home!

You're already fighting to keep out this hot summer air. What if it's already inside? Does your fireplace look like this? Do you know? Heat from this fireplace is pouring in from the chimney because the flue isn't closed - this is 91 degree air that is just dumping into the home unchecked.

I see a lot of my Candelas neighbors complaining about cold spots in certain rooms. Sure, you could rent or borrow a thermal camera but what would your next steps be, and what kind of results would you see? An official energy audit provides a (very!) thorough report that shows the findings, recommendations, and the expected savings you'd see on your energy bill.

For example, do you have an area in your basement that looks like this? Did you know this is the 2nd leakiest part of every home? What do you do to correct this?
