There's an old saying in the mountains:
"By July, the garden tells the truth."
Long before grocery stores and next-day shipping, July in Western North Carolina wasn't just another summer month, it was the season of reward. Gardens overflowed. Families spent mornings in the fields, afternoons preserving what the land had given them, and evenings gathered on front porches as the whip-poor-wills called through the hollers.
One saying has been passed down through these mountains for generations: life can't be rushed. Not a tomato. Not a summer thunderstorm. Not the friendships that become family.
