With a population of 85,295 people and 31 constituent neighborhoods, Asheville is the 11th largest community in North Carolina. Asheville real estate is some of the most expensive in North Carolina, although Asheville house values don't compare to the most expensive real estate in the U.S. Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Asheville is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Asheville is a city of professionals, sales and office workers and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Asheville who work in sales jobs (11.51%), office and administrative support (10.88%) and food service (9.44%). A relatively large number of people in Asheville telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 8.37% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes. Another interesting thing about Asheville, despite not being a huge city, is that there is a relatively high proportion of people living here who are young, single, and upwardly-mobile professionals. This makes it a good choice for other relocating single professionals. Here, these young singles will find many others like themselves, with opportunities for friendships, socializing, romance, and fun. Asheville Information and Demographics
