Have you ever heard of hardboard siding. This defective material was installed on homes in the 1980’s and 90’s. The siding was prone to excessive decay and rot. As a result, the siding manufacture was involved in a class-action lawsuit. The manufacture ultimately stoped production in 2000. When we look at your home, the siding and installation is carefully reviewd. We utilize our knowledge of defective materials and common mistakes in installation. Even in today’s new construction siding is often not installed to the manufacture’s instructions or even to building code. We educate ourselves to the standards required so that you don’t wind up with a siding situation like in the photo I have shared.

Crawl spaces are not fun. A person can expect cobwebs, animals, fungal growth, standing water, open ended electrical wires, protruding nails, fallen down insulation. To say the least it is a non-hospitable environment. As a home inspector we are required to go into all the places you don’t want to go. These places are always the troubled areas of a home. It is imperative that you have a trusted inspector to go to these places and report back. I am happy to say that this crawlspace is just fine.

As we wrap up this year and go into the next French Broad Inspections wants to thank everyone who supported us in our first year of business. We especially want to thank our clients and agents. This year did not come without challenges. Economic uncertainty and a natural disaster here in WNC put us to the test. We feel very fortunate to share in the forward facing mentality of our community to help one another to make life better even in challenging times. I wanted to take a minute and say hello as we come out of this disaster here in western NC. It has been heartwarming to receive calls of support. It has absolutely been inspiring to see the community and volunteers from all over help one another. This mountain community is full of very strong people, but we all have a long road in front of us. As French Broad Inspections moves forward we will be offering discounts on inspections such as for storm damage assessment inspections. This type of inspection is designed to identify any hidden or obvious damages to the home and offer suggestions for the next steps. We feel this is one way to offer services to our community to help ensure the safety of our homes so that we can get back to normal. We are here for our community and friends as we continue to be MOUNTAIN STRONG!

Here is an electrical panel that I opened the other day. Inside was a surprise! A snake found its way into the panel and as they say, found another life. The meeting of electrical components and the snake caused damage in the panel that needs a good review by a licensed electrical contractor. Sometimes the unimaginable occurs in your home. I'm glad that this was easily found in my clients home inspection. Now this can be taken care of and the clients can feel safe as they move forward on their home purchase.

This home is insulated like a yeti cooler. This is great for heating and cooling efficiency but sometimes a tightly insulated home can result in a home that will have high radon readings. It's that time of year again when we start to find those fun creatures that love to call our homes their homes. We had snakes in the basement and bats in the belfry, so to speak. All in one home! You just never know what we will find as we inspect a home. Some would call these natural pest control. Fortunately these critters can be safely removed and unharmed.
