Planning a waterfall hike in WNC? 💦
From iconic spots like Looking Glass Falls to peaceful hidden gems, Western North Carolina’s waterfalls are the perfect way to cool off—but staying safe is key to a fun day out.
Here are 5 must-know waterfall safety tips before you hit the trail:
1. Stay on developed trails.
It’s tempting to wander, but going off-trail can be dangerous for you and damaging to local plants and wildlife.
2. Follow all posted instructions.
Trail conditions can change quickly—especially after storms—so always read signs for closures, warnings, or detours.
3. Watch your footing.
Even dry rocks can be slippery—especially if covered with leaves or algae. Always tread carefully near water.
4. Don’t lean over a ledge.
The top of a waterfall is the most dangerous place to be. If you're taking photos, double-check your footing and stay back from the edge.
5. Follow general hiking safety.
Never hike alone, keep your phone charged, bring water, snacks, and dry clothes—and keep a close eye on kids and pets.
Enjoy the beauty of the Blue Ridge—safely! 🌿
