This may be a game changer for the town of Canton, just east of Asheville. The paper mill closing caused a huge impact in jobs for the area. Let’s hope this new venture will be up and running soon and be the boost in job resources the area needs.

Buncombe County residents have two free ways to get rid of debris from their homes:

- Right of Way Pickup: Public right of way pickup is for residents who are able to move storm debris from their homes to the public right of way. This is the easiest way to get rid of storm debris as crews are making several passes. We ask to place debris within 10 feet of the right of way so that trucks are able to pick them up and separate debris into large appliances, construction materials, vegetative debris, hazardous waste, and electronics. As of Monday, Dec. 9, 465,121 cubic yards of debris have been picked up collectively in Buncombe County, Black Mountain, and the City of Asheville.

- Private Property Debris Removal (PPDR): For debris that cannot be moved to the curb or unsafe structures requiring removal, residents can sign up at buncombeready.org or visit an application center at one of the following locations: Asheville Mall, Barnardsville Fire Department, Swannanoa Fire Department (Bee Tree Road), or Fairview Library.

NC Realtors® is making $625,000 in grants available for Western North Carolina homeowners impacted by Hurricane Helene, with $1,000 available for each qualifying household.

The NC REALTORS® Disaster Relief fund is getting $500,000 from the Realtors® Relief Foundation and $125,000 from the NC Realtors® Housing Foundation.

One application is allowed per household. Also, applicants will need to supply identification, proof of ownership or a mortgage, and photo evidence of damage.

Applications are now being taken, and we encourage LOTSAR members to inform impacted community members about the fund.

LOTSAR volunteers will be at the LOTSAR office (21 Restaurant Court, Asheville) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30 to help members or applicants with filling out applications, or to answer questions.
