Every once in a while, I fall in love with a house. My work as an agent has always been about the relationships, the people, the opportunity to connect with, serve and learn from my clients. But, there are times when the house is also a star attraction. This new listing is one of those instances. Carolyn and Jim made Camelfield their home more than two decades ago. They have loved this tree house every day of their time there. With that love, like anything that receives true affection, comes care and attention. From the incredible low-maintenance landscaping to the log-book of maintenance tasks and updates over the years, the house is a shining example of what happens when people love something. Now, as they move onto a new adventure in their lives, they are ready for the next owners to fall in love with Camelfield. It won't be difficult - mountain views, privacy from an included second lot, a primary suite on the main floor, abundant outdoor space, all an easy skip outside of Weaverville in Reems Creek. With easy access to the Parkway and a stunning, quiet setting, this home would make a lovely short-term rental for an investor. But, it just as easily would welcome someone looking for their own mountain home. Come, see for yourself. Just be prepared to fall in love.

Remember Shell? Here she is standing in front of the door to her house! Because I was so proud of her, I couldn't help but also document her awesomeness during the final walkthrough when she crawled around to make sure she understood the important systems of the home.

The process was full of emotions and challenges, but Shell remained committed to her vision and calling to lay down roots in the mountains. With the support of her friends, and her dogged determination to learn everything she could, she made it through the inevitable ups and downs of buying a home. Her trust in me to help her navigate those positional changes is a gift that I am honored to hold.

Keep an eye out for her around the area - she'll be the badass swimming in mountain lakes and rivers continuing the exciting adventure of creating her own life.

Welcome home, Shell.

Remember these two? Mia and .sullivan_ are home! After months of patient but challenging searching and after submitting offers in a competitive market that didn't seem to have their best interests at heart, they were able to land a contract on a home that hit their entire dream list - in the heart of West AVL, clean and modern lines, efficient and thoughtful design in a setting that blended the beauty of the mountains with the spice of the city. The contract, of course, is just another step in the process - make no mistake, it's a BIG step, but it's not the finish line. Thankfully, they brought their same patient, practical willingness to bear on the next step and the next step and the next step all the way to the closing table the other day. From inspections and repair negotiations to the endless and mind numbing demands of the bank, from lining up utilities to coordinating their busy work schedules, they supported each other and remained absolutely open to the help and counsel I offered. They're moving into their home as I write this, and I couldn't be happier. I'm so honored by their trust in me, and am grateful to know that they are part of our shared community - saving lives with their work and enriching lives with their presence. Congratulations you two!

Meet Kimberly and Colton and their three amazing dynamos. Years ago, before one of the girls, before surprises and challenges, before life happened in its fullest, I helped them find their first home in Fletcher. Back then, like now, the hustle, push, go, go, go needed to ride the wave of a tight market was challenging, but these two stayed true to their plan and they made a sweet little house their family's home. Kim never met a plant she couldn't coax into a flourishing life, and Colton never met a creative project he couldn't teach himself with the help of YouTube and trial and error. After building a greenhouse and wood shop and a chicken coop and a homeschool and a life, an opportunity arose for them to do it again in East Tennessee, which meant it was time to move. When an offer didn't materialize from an acquaintance with a promise of an easy cash purchase, this incredible family took a deep breath, put their heads down and went to work, cleaning, spreading, painting, storing. I've never seen a house so fully transformed in such a short time. Moving is rarely easy and even less seldom is it fun, but these five have embraced the work of it, stayed connected, leaning into their trust and faith and hope. Now, with a solid contract in place, they are on the hunt for a new place to call home. I'm going to miss having them as neighbors - I'm sad that I never learned how to hand-carve an axe handle from Colton or how to spout a philodendron from Kimberly - but I'm glad to know that they are in our shared world, bringing their smiles and tenacious commitment to the communities they touch, and I'm honored by their trust. Go, live all you can!

Meet Brandon...

In addition to saving lives through public health communication, Brandon is a gymnastics coach that works with athletes of all ages. That's good, because it would be a stretch to call myself an athlete, I'm definitely not a gymnast, and my age is... old. Still, he's helping me work toward a long-simmering goal to hold a handstand. I tell myself it's for my morning yoga practice - I'm reluctant to go upside down knowing I will likely land right side up on top of our wood stove - and that's true. But, when I'm really honest, it's also so that I can beat two of my daughters (both who ARE gymnasts and athletes and young) in impromptu competitions in the yard, or on the street or at the airport. I've got a ways to go, but I have no doubt that Brandon will get me there. I asked him the other day, as he was encouraging me through a conditioning program that left my shoulders quaking for days and my core aflame, if he'd be willing to follow me around all day. Everyone needs encouragement in the midst of hard things, I said, and he's the absolute best.

It's a joy to work with him, and an unalloyed pleasure to watch him at his craft. We were made to move, and Brandon makes complex movement look graceful and easy, while teaching it in a way that is clear and simple. What's more, my world is better with the smile in it. I am grateful.

Meet Shell...

A few years ago, she packed up her car and drove away from the rugged California coast. "It was time for a change," she told me when I met her for coffee at the wonderful little Filo Pastries in East Asheville. She'd spent nearly every day of her then 60-some years living, working and swimming in the west and she needed to hit the RESET button. She's not the only client I've worked with who has told me that. It makes sense to me; these mountains, their ancient trees and lush landscape and deep presence, pulls on some of us. Shell landed here, unpacked her car and started to settle in; not an easy thing to do considering that whole COVID thing. Still, she rented a less than awesome place that worked, she joined a hiking group, she pulled out her painting gear, she started working a new life. While she no longer has the Pacific for her cold water adventures, she has been swimming in the Davidson River and is always on the lookout for other cold water opportunities where she can practice her badass Wim Hof breathing. Yes... she's really cool.

Now, she's ready to find a home that's hers. One with good light for painting, with space to stretch and views to rest in. Vaulted ceilings would be nice, too. She described her perfect place to me with clarity and specificity - she'd thought long and hard about what she wanted for her new home. When she finished, she looked at me and laughed just a little. "It's a unicorn, I know, but it's my unicorn." I told her you don't get what you don't ask for. We need a place to start our search and then find places to give and take, tweak and adjust. We're on the hunt, and her willingness to explore new areas, to get her bearings in unfamiliar terrain, is the single best thing she can be doing for herself and this process. That willingness is like a filter, helping Shell, and me, get rid of areas that don't work and zero in on those that do... Wolf Laurel is OUT, Swannanoa is IN.

Meet Mia and Aidan.

They haven't been here all that long. call. Referred to me by one of my favorite clients in the world, Mia called months before they moved here from Upstate New York.

We talked while I walked up and down my street, enjoying the sun setting to the west. I listened as she shared their hopes and dreams to make a WNC home together.

This will be their first house purchase and they entered the process with humility and patience - values that I knew would serve them well. We talked about how they might get finances and loan options sorted out, and the tedious work of organizing and ordering the necessary dominos.

Months later, they called again, ready to hit the ground running.

They'd made the move away from NY lake-effect snow, landing in a rental that they didn't love but worked well enough. They were, they are, in love with West Asheville's delicious treats and hidden delights, its quirky nooks and crannies and its eclectic collection of life. They were both settled into work saving lives - at the hospital serving the sickest of patients in the ICU, and as a mental health therapist at a substance abuse clinic - and wanted to set their roots down deep.

We've wandered all over West Asheville, and beyond, together.

They've shared donuts with me, educated me on where to find the best budget-friendly tacos in town, and inspired me with their patient and pragmatic partnership.

I am honored by their trust in me to help them see things they don't know to see and know things they don't know.

They not only have their dominos in a row, they have their ducks in a row, as well, not to mention their hearts in a row - all critical rows to have for a successful home purchase. All critical rows, really, to have for a successful life.

They understand that the process can be long and challenging, that it often includes disappointments and changes of mind and emotions that can be surprising, but I know, and they know, that they can handle all of that. I have no doubt that we'll find their home, and I can't wait to celebrate with them.

Hi there, I'm Sam.

While slow to accept the rising tide, I know that these platforms are incredible way to tell stories, and telling stories is something that I really, really like to do.

Stories about people and places and what makes things stick. Stories about lessons learned and new perspectives and old ways of being that still work. I love listening and watching and pulling on threads that are woven through seemingly disparate parts.

I really, really like telling stories.

It just so happens that this job I do - helping people navigate the stressful and exciting and overwhelming and hopeful process of buying and selling real estate - gives me opportunities every day to hang out with cool people, listen to their hopes and their stories - and then help them chart a course forward. That path is often long and meandering and indirect, but it is always, always filled with stories.

I know that the more we listen, the more we connect with and learn from others, the better our shared community will be. Thanks for coming along.

A quick shout to Allegory and Elm Photography for the great pictures, and to Nicole Rule for the patient, oh so patient, hand holding through these eel-infested technological waters.
