Shelter of Hope, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit homeless shelter helping the homeless in the FIVCO Area of Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Greenup, and Lawrence Counties in Kentucky. Our mission is to provide temporary emergency shelter and permanent housing assistance for individuals and families in need of transitional services leading them to self-sufficiency, and for whom no services are available from existing community resources. Preference is given to homeless households, families with children, homeless veterans with or without children, adults with disabilities, and domestic violence victims unable to enter the local Victim Service Provider. Provisions for our guests are made without discrimination because of age, race, color, creed, religion, s*x, handicap, national origin, familial status, marital status, s*xual orientation, or gender identity.
The Shelter of Hope provides the following services and programs for individuals, families, and veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless:
· TEMPORARY EMERGENCY HOUSING includes 10 fully furnished 1- & 2-bedroom apartments. Guests receive assistance with food from our pantry, household furnishings and supplies, and personal hygiene items.
· HOME TBRA (Tenant-Based Rental Assistance) supplements a household’s rent until a HUD Housing Choice Voucher is approved.
· RAPID RE-HOUSING helps with locating housing, security and utility deposits, and rent.
· CoC (Continuum of Care) is a comprehensive approach that addresses homelessness by providing a continuum of housing programs and services including outreach, intake, and assessment; emergency shelter services; transitional housing services; and permanent supportive housing for people with disabilities.
· TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM is a partnership with the City of Ashland Assisted Housing office. Guests may stay a minimum of twelve months. The transitional housing guests, through case management, learn how to be good tenants, learn budget management, begin a savings account, get education, job training, and improving poor credit and bad landlord references. The transitional program charges rent through the Section 8 program and is income based. Some furniture is also provided to all families when they move into permanent housing.
Shelter of Hope continues to increase services to meet the rising demand for affordable low-income housing, as well as to improve community involvement and support through homelessness awareness education.
OUR OVERSIGHT
The Shelter of Hope, Inc. is guided by a volunteer Board of Directors who oversee operations and programs. Day-to-day operations are administered by an Executive Director, a Case Manager, and a Community Relations & Outreach Coordinator. The shelter is also assisted by AmeriCorps member(s) and social work practicum student(s), in addition to numerous Ready-to-Work, community, and shelter guest volunteers.
OUR PARTNER AGENCIES
Shelter of Hope continues to expand supportive services through housing initiatives, financial literacy, case management, and collaboration with programs such as AmeriCorps, VISTA, and United Way. Shelter of Hope also works in partnership with other local organizations, such as The Neighborhood, which includes: CAReS (Community Assistance & Referral Service), River Cities Harvest, the Community Kitchen, the Dressing Room, and Clean Start. Other partner agencies such as the Salvation Army Shelter, Safe Harbor, ReGroup, Pathways, Veteran’s Affairs, the City of Ashland, the Ashland Area Ministerial Association, and many local churches are crucial to the services Shelter of Hope can provide. Shelter of Hope also has a working relationship with Kentucky Housing Corporation and the Homeless and Housing Coalition of Kentucky.
