In the 1950s, many young men in Astoria lacked access to constructive places and activities, contributing to a rise in gang activity throughout the neighborhood. Recognizing this challenge, a group of dedicated community leaders came together with a clear and positive vision for Astoria’s youth. Among the founders of the Boys Club were Judge Charles J. Vallone, Meyer “Moe” J. Baranco, George P. Skouras, Spyros P. Skouras Sr., Salah M. Hassanein, and many others who, over the decades that followed, generously contributed their time, leadership, and resources to create lasting opportunities for the community’s young people. That same spirit of commitment continues today as a new, state-of-the-art clubhouse is being built on the site—ensuring that the founders’ vision will serve even more young people with expanded programs, modern facilities, and renewed hope for the future of Astoria.
