The Lofts at 832 Would like to highlight our first dog of the Month for June Emmett. We had an interview with his owner and it was very enlightening!
Tell us about your dog’s origin story (how they chose you, how you chose them, or how they got their name).
Emmett was born Wiggles on Aug 18, 2014 at Melodylane Ranch and Corgis in Hanover, Ks. His name isn’t anything special; I just wanted a sort of bland human name for a dog. However, his official title is Lord Wiggles Von Flufferbottom, so he ended up being Wiggles still after all.
Why a corgi?
What child hasn’t dreamt of owning a velociraptor? Having already owned the monster under the bed, I expanded my options into demons in cute packaging: corgis and hedgehogs. Honestly, don’t do it; the internet lies.
Squirrels, bunnies, or birds?
Squirrels
If you could ask your dog one question and have them answer, what would it be?
Does the car window really have to always be down in all weather conditions and temperatures?
What is your dog’s beige flag?
I’m his emotional support animal. While we’re a great working team and he’s a fantastic service dog, he’s incapable of providing emotional support. He can be obnoxiously clingy and codependent though.
What table scrap would your dog trade you for?
YES! but say “French fries” or “nuggies” and you’d better deliver! Other favorite delicacies include whatever you’re currently eating, ice cream, cheese, popcorn, tortilla chips, and cheeseburgers, but absolutely not spinach. Bleh! However, while we enjoy sharing snacks, we remind everyone to use moderation; corgis are notoriously food driven overeaters that are prone to obesity. It’s very common to see corgis over 60 pounds.
If your dog had a job, what would it be?
He does! He’s a service corgi, which means he’s trained to do specific tasks for me as a disabled person. He’s actually not a pet but a piece of medical equipment that I rely on. While it’s fine to greet him with some scritches and say hi, please don’t call him or actively distract him away from me. He’s off leash as part of his work, and I need him focused for both his safety and my own. You’re welcome to ask any questions you may have about the ADA and service animals or watch us working because I’m constantly running drills and whatnot with him for enrichment and reinforcement. Service dog team is a full time job for both of us!
What is your dog’s name for you?
Human, Feeder, Person, or They.
When your dog is dreaming, what’s it about?
Stoll dog park and chasing squirrels
If your dog had a dating profile, what would be their most attractive quality?
His charm, but he’s got the handsome features, smile, and pretty eyes to pull off total himbo.
If your dog slid into our DM’s, what would they say?
Can I have a kitty?
Is there anything else we should know about your dog? (think funny anecdotes, defining characteristics, etc.)
Corgis are dramatic af, and he’s definitely gotten more “corgi” the older he’s gotten. Now that we’re a geriatric corgi, we’re having some hip problems, so give the old man a little extra time on stairs and hardwood and compliment any assistive footwear we may acquire to help with traction. If you see him dragging a back leg, he’s okay; we’re just not moving as fast or as easily as we used to.
