In 1907, Epps designed, built, and flew Georgia’s first powered aircraft, just four years after the Wright brothers' famous flight at Kitty Hawk. Imagine it: a wooden-framed, cloth-covered plane with bicycle wheels lifting off from a pasture near Athens. At the time, it was a daring and near-miraculous feat!

Epps went on to build several more planes, start a flight school, and even run an aviation service. He wasn’t just a flyer—he was an innovator, craftsman, and community hero. His passion for flight paved the way for aviation across the state.

Today, Athens-Ben Epps Airport stands as a living tribute to his legacy—one of the oldest continuously operating airports in Georgia.
