Legacy.

It’s above me now.

Picture it… it was a crisp, fall Virginia night under the Friday night lights and my senior year as co-captain of our cheer squad. It was Homecoming for our rival team. As tradition goes, they presented their homecoming court during halftime. When they crowned the Queen, I bursted into cheers of support for this complete stranger on the opposing side. Because in that moment, there was the joyful recognition and relatable feeling of the only black girl being chosen to shine amongst a sea-full of predominantly white peers. It was an Issa Rae on the Emmy awards carpet moment ( ) decades before the viral meme would trend.
A year later, that moment would come full circle when two girls walking to their first day of class across the plush green campus Quad of James Madison University would cross paths, strike up conversation and realized one was the cheerleader and the other was the homecoming queen from that night when swirled through the stadium air.
From rival schools to roommates, to Atlanta with nothing but cars and clothes, through boys & babies, Vegas Nights, weddings, funerals and everything between… 2+ decades of cheers, tears, bitter truths, hard lessons, shenanigans and stories for years. Happy birthday my beautiful sisterfriend. Love you for life! 😘

This month ushers in new beginnings; changes that are simultaneously exciting & nerve-wracking. But I step into this season with faith that all will work together for GOOD!
