On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and informed more than 250,000 enslaved people that they were free. This came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. Two and a half years!

The proclamation was monumental. But Juneteenth is the day freedom was actually delivered. There is a difference, and it deserves to be named correctly.
