Before you fall in love with a listing, drive the actual commute at the actual time you’d be doing it every day. That “quick 15 minutes” can turn into 40 the moment school traffic or a merge lane gets involved, and that’s the kind of thing that wears on you way faster than a paint color you don’t love.

Thinking about buying a home? Before you start scrolling listings, there are a few things worth doing first.

Here are 3 moves to make before you begin your home search:

1. Start saving early. Slash unnecessary expenses and build a budget around your goal. Every dollar you set aside gets you closer to the keys.

2. Work on your credit score. Pay down those credit cards. The more available credit you have and the lower your utilization, the stronger your score, and the better your loan options.

3. Hold off on big purchases. Financing a car or anything major before closing can reduce your loanable amount and throw off your pre-approval. Not worth the risk.
