During Black History Month, we honor the visionaries who quite literally built the cities we serve.
Few names are as synonymous with Atlanta’s growth as Herman J. Russell. From humble beginnings to becoming one of the nation’s most influential developers and entrepreneurs, Russell helped shape modern Atlanta through construction, business leadership, and civic commitment.
H.J. Russell and Company, founded in 1956, became the largest minority business enterprise real estate company in the United States by working on numerous landmarks like Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Georgia Dome, Philips Arena (later State Farm Arena), Turner Field, Centennial Olympic Park, Grady Memorial Hospital, Delta Air Lines Worldspan and Operations Centers, and so much more!
Over the course of fifty years, Russell's impact extended beyond buildings — he opened doors for minority contractors, invested in entrepreneurship, and strengthened Atlanta’s reputation as a city of opportunity.
At Coldwell Banker Commercial Metro Brokers, we are proud to operate in a city shaped by leaders like Herman J. Russell — leaders who understood that development is not just about structures, but about impact. As we advise clients on investments, site selection, leasing, and development strategy, we carry forward that same belief: what we build today shapes Atlanta tomorrow.
This Black History Month, we celebrate the builders, the barrier-breakers, and the bold visionaries who laid the foundation for the work we do every day!
