One of Atlanta’s most historic and dense neighborhoods might become the home of
a 350,000 square foot data center.
Digital Realty has a $500 million proposal for Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard in
Adair Park, right by the West End MARTA station. Their pitch: it cleans up a
contaminated industrial site, adds retail, improves sidewalks and creates jobs.
Here is what is not in the proposal. No annual water use limit. No generator rules
covering diesel emissions or noise. No grid impact study. No job numbers.
Data centers are windowless buildings full of computers. They use enormous
amounts of power and water, and once they are built they employ very few people.
That is a lot to put next to a neighborhood this old and this dense without any of
those numbers on paper.
Worth reading the actual filing rather than the summary.
