Dear Angels,
I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for your incredible generosity and support during this challenging time. Your donations mean the world to me and are truly making a difference in my life. They will help me navigate the long healing journey ahead, especially as I work towards walking proficiently again after my leg amputation and enduring ten surgeries.
As I continue to battle stage 4 cancer, the financial burden of out-of-pocket expenses has been overwhelming. The chemotherapy pills I take to manage the growth of the cancer in my lungs and the tumor in my thigh are essential, but they come with their own set of challenges. With regular visits to my doctor every two months for CT scans, MRIs, and treatment, I am grateful to have your support to lean on.
I had my two-week post-op appointment on Friday, January 18, 2024. Dr. Fang examined my femur and confirmed that everything is healing well. He decided to keep the staples in until November 1st to ensure proper healing. I have a physical therapy team that comes to my home every Monday to strengthen the left side of my body in preparation for the next phase of my recovery. The goal is to make my femur strong enough to begin weight-bearing activities. Dr. Fang has advised against starting that process until the beginning of the new year. The bone needs to encapsulate the metal rods first. Once that happens, Iβll transition to weight bearing to wearing my prosthesis and begin the journey of learning to walk again.
Today, I visited the pain management doctor to get back on my daily medications to help manage my daily pain.
Tomorrow, I have an appointment with my oncologist for scans, blood work, and other tests. The doctor has paused my chemotherapy pills for the surgery, and they will be assessing whether the tumors have grown. Itβs important for the doctor to determine if the medication is still effective during this time without the pills. Tomorrow will be a long day; I need to be at Winship by 9:30 AM and expect to leave around 3:00 PM. All the testing will take place in the morning and early afternoon, followed by a consultation with my doctor to review the results and to inform me as to when I'm to start back on the Chemo pills. It's been nice to be off of them, because they cause extreme fatigue. Once my body has been on the chemo pills a while and my body gets acclimated the fatique my not be so bad.
I know this all seems like it's a lot. It definitely is a lot, but I will continue to push through with happiness and gratitude in my spirit each and everyday, because that's what it takes. The lesson is you never know what a person endures in there life each and everyday, so please be kind to people even if they're not. It's really not about them it's about planting your own kindness seeds.
I will give updates as they come in.
Thank you for being my angels and for standing by me through this difficult journey. Your kindness and compassion gives me strength and hope every day.
With all my love and gratitude,
Lisa Bennett
