The largest pro solar argument is when people say "it’s their land." While that is true, the fincancial risk doesnt stay on their land.

Taxpayers subsidize construction, utilities request rate increases to build them, and when damage or lost generation happens, consumers can end up paying higher electric bills, all while the landowner keeps collecting their lease check.

There are so many questions that still need answers.

1. Who pays to clean up the damage?

2. Does this type of damage impact the landowner’s lease agreement with the developer?

3. Where do the broken panels end up?

4. What are the long-term impacts to the land and groundwater from shattered panels and debris?

5. Will the infrastructure be replaced, and if so, how long will that process take?

6. What happens if the stability of our power grid becomes heavily dependent on sources that can be so extensively damaged by severe weather?

7. How are non-participating landowners compensated if debris damages their property?

8. Does the developer have access to taxpayer funds to help cover repair or cleanup costs?

9. Who pays for damage to participating landowners properties caused by these panels?

10. Do the rest of the solar fields continue producing energy while damaged panels are being repaired, or does the entire project become non-functional during that time?

And ultimately, the question many people are asking:

WAS IT WORTH IT?

Tornado damage is not unique to solar infrastructure. However, we also cannot ignore the possibility that the risks involved may outweigh the benefits. These are important questions our communities deserve answers to before more farmland is converted.

What a terrible mess.

DeKalb County is in a good position right now. Both candidates running for County Commissioner have publicly stated they oppose replacing productive farmland with utility-scale solar, and two of the three current commissioners have consistently voted and/or spoken out against utility-scale solar projects.

It’s good to see local leadership acknowledging how important farmland, rural character, and responsible development are to our county.

Learn more about the commissioner candidates and their positions here:

Sculpin, we warned you about lying. You posted yesterday saying solar projects don't drive up electricity bills.

Funny story - we already have a solar surcharge on our electric bill for a project that isn't even in our county.

Another funny story - in 2023 there was a rate increase request submitted to the regulatory commission for YOUR project.

But, we should trust you, right?! Shame on you.

The hypocrisy is real.

Congratulations Putnam County. πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘

πŸŽ‰πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ CONGRATULATIONS PUTNAM COUNTY β€” WE DID IT!!! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸŽ‰

Tonight, we celebrate a MAJOR victory for our community!

EnergyRe has officially WITHDRAWN their current 4Leaf application!!! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

This didn’t just happen.
This happened because YOU showed up.
Because YOU asked questions.
Because YOU stood your ground.
Because YOU refused to back down when it came to protecting our homes, our farmland, our water, and our future.

For months, our county has been engaged, informed, and united. Neighbors talked to neighbors. Families attended meetings. Farmers spoke up. Volunteers worked tirelessly.

This is what grassroots looks like.
This is what local voices can do.
This is what happens when a community decides its future matters.

Putnam County proved something powerful:
πŸ‘‰ We are not just a flyover community.
πŸ‘‰ We are not a blank space on a developer’s map.
πŸ‘‰ We are a county full of people who care deeply about where we live.

No matter where you stood in this discussion, one thing is undeniable. Our community was engaged. That matters. Civic involvement matters. Transparency matters. Local control matters.

Tonight is a reminder that when citizens participate, big things can happen.

Be proud, Putnam County.
Take a deep breath.
And know that your voice made a difference.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ’ͺ This is what community looks like.

Watch the paper tomorrow for the official notice.
